Burma Roundtable in Toronto

Burma Roundtable in Toronto
Press Release No.2 (2)/99
July 8, 1999

For the first time, a Burma Roundtable will be taken place on coming Sunday,
July 11, 1999 in Toronto. The aim of holding such event is to draw more
attention from Canadian and Burmese societies in Toronto on Human Rights
situation and political upheaval in Burma. It is also expected that Canadian
regional politicians and government officials will be informed of what is
going on in Burma and what should be done on Burma through that regular
Roundtable.

Furthermore, Burmese and Canadian activists are planning to discuss some
effective and supportive activities for Burma in coincidence with targeted
nation-wide 9999 action (Democracy Movement) in Burma.

So far, there are three Burma Roundtables in Canada; those are in Vancouver,
Ottawa and now in Toronto. With these roundtables monthly held in relevant
areas, Burmese and Canadian activists have a great chance to meet and
discuss about necessary plan and action for improving Human Rights situation
and democratization in Burma. In fact, such event is showed very effective
and useful in lobbying the government and parliament to put more pressure on
ruling Burmese military regime. For instance, activists in Vancouver could
persuade the British Columbia provincial parliament to recognize the
Committee for Representing People Parliament (CRPP) as a legal body in
Burma. The committee was founded after being ignored by regime to call
parliament based on 1990 election in Burma, in which opposition party NLD
(National League for Democracy) won with 82% in the poll.

Before getting federal parliament?s recongnisation on CRPP, lobbying the
provincial parliaments to recognize the CRPP is the first step for Burmese
and Canadian activists, and in this case those Burma Roundtables would be
essential for such ultimate aim.
