Army wants three border passes closed

Alarm over traffic in people, narcotics

Subin Khuenkaew

The Third Army has demanded the closure of three temporary border checkpoints
because of security concerns after a series of human and drug smuggling
incidents through these areas.
Third Army commander Lt-Gen Sommai Vichavorn said he had asked the National
Security Council (NSC) to order the closure of Ban Lak Taeng checkpoint in
Wiang Haeng district, Ban Kiew Pha Wok checkpoint in Chiang Dao district and
Ban San Ton Doo checkpoint in Mae Ai district to prevent the further illegal
entry of aliens and drugs smugglers into Thailand via the checkpoints.

Lt-Gen Sommai Vichavorn said: "Kiew Pha Wok checkpoint has been closed
already.
But Ban San Ton Doo and Ban Lak Taeng checkpoints are still open.

"The opening of the three checkpoints has affected internal security. Many
aliens have entered the country illegally via these temporary checkpoints.

"In addition, some people are using some loopholes in the law to smuggle drug
precursors. "More importantly, these checkpoints are being used as bases for
drug gangs to launder their dirty money," he added.

Lt-Gen Sommai said the military should be allowed to help monitor the
operation
of temporary border checkpoints to ensure security in case they are reopened.

Cross-border trade could be continued even after the closure of the three
checkpoints since two permanent border checkpoints, Mae Sai and Mae Sotm,
remained open, he said.

A reliable source said Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Surayud Chulanont is
scheduled to inspect the three temporary border checkpoints early next month.
