RICE-MILL PLEA


THE president of the Thai Rice Mills Association yesterday urged the Labour
Ministry to permit the industry to continue hiring foreign workers because
Thai
workers were not interested in back-breaking jobs. 
The economic crisis and liquidity problem have forced rice mills throughout
the
country to turn to cheap foreign workers to help them through hard times. 
''About 10,000 foreigners are working in rice mills throughout the country,''
Bamrung Kritpakorn said. 
The government has set Aug 4 as the deadline to expell all illegal foreign
workers from the country. 
The ministry has yet to decide which labour-intensive industries will be
allowed to continue hiring foreign workers.
