YANGON (June 11) XINHUA - First Secretary of the
Myanmar State Peace and Development Council
(SPDC) Lieutenant-General Khin Nyunt will attend
the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected
president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki, according to
an official announcement issued here Friday.
At the invitation of President Nelson R Mandela,
khin Nyunt is to take part in the ceremony on behalf
of the Myanmar SPDC Chairman Senior-General
Than Shwe, it said.
Myanmar and S. Africa established diplomatic
relations on April 20, 1995 and S. Africa is also one
of the 10 countries with which the Myanmar military
government established such relations since it
came to power on September 18, 1988.
Myanmar and S. Africa agreed then to develop
friendly relations and cooperation between the two
countries on the basis of the Five Principles of
Peaceful Co-existence and the principles enshrined
in the Charter of the United Nations.
