Myanmar Says Jailed Opposition Member Hanged Himself

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- A member of the opposition
National League for Democracy hanged himself in his
prison
cell, the military regime in Myanmar said Wednesday.

Hla Khin, 43, hanged himself May 31 with a traditional
garment known as a longyi at Insein Prison in Yangon, the
Myanmar capital, the government said in a statement sent
to
               The Associated Press in Bangkok.

His cellmate was asleep, it said.

Hla Khin was one of thousands of members of the NLD, led
by Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who have
been imprisoned or held by the government in recent
years.

The party won legislative elections allowed in 1990, but
the
military never allowed the parliament to meet. The
military
has ruled Myanmar, also known as Burma, since 1962.

The statement said Hla Khin had been serving an
unspecified prison sentence for violating a 1975 law
aimed
at safeguarding "the state against dangers of subversive
               elements."

The government called his death a "sad and unexpected
event" and said officials were "contributing to the
welfare of
               the family."

There was no immediate comment from the NLD, which
operates under severe restrictions from the government.

Several associates of Suu Kyi have died in Insein Prison
over the years. Human rights groups say prisoners are
subjected to physical and mental abuse.
