Rally in support of CRPP in Burma
Wednesday 26th May 1999

When: Thursday 27th May
Where: 1pm Outside Burmese Embassy, 22 Arkana St Yarralumla, Canberra

This action is occurring on the 9th anniversary of Democratic elections =
in
Burma. The results of this election have been aggressively undermined =
by
the military regime currently operating in Burma. This rally is to =
remind
the Australian community of the continuing struggle for democracy in =
Burma.

General Secretary of the All Burma Student Democratic Organisation, =
Maung
Maung Than said:
"We call for the International Community and Australian Parliaments to
support the Committee Representing the People's Parliament (CRPP) as the
legitimate highest authority of the people of Burma, and recognise its
lawful right to convene the people's parliament as per the 1990 election
results.

"The international recognition of the CRPP is instrumental to the =
convening
of a People's Parliament in Burma."

President of NUS NSW Amanda Tattersall said:
"The Burmese military regime is one of the most vicious dictatorships in =
the
world. Nine years ago democratic elections were held and violently =
ignored
by this regime. Ever since the Committee Representing People's =
Parliament
in Burma who were rightfully elected have been struggling to achieve a
democratic and open government in that country.

"Before a People's Parliament can be established the 150 members of
parliament currently held as political prisoners must be freed. We call =
for
their immediate release.

"The National Union of Students supports the struggle for a People's
Parliament in Burma - supporting this rally today is one of many steps =
in a
struggle for freedom for the Burmese people."
