Statement on the Ninth Anniversary of the 1990 May Elections

Date: 27 May 1999

The 8-8-88 General Uprising, demanding democracy and human rights in Burma,
toppled the one-party system of the old military regime, the so-called Burma
Socialist Programme Party (BSPP), which arbitrarily took over state power on
2 March 1962. The military junta, fearing a restoration of democracy and
human rights in Burma, staged another coup d'etat on 18 September 1988
backed by massive weapons power against an unarmed populace. The peaceful
demonstrations by students, ordinary citizens and monks were brutally and
bloodily suppressed all over the country.

Because of the 1988 General Uprising calling for democracy and human rights
and pressure from the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi, other political parties, and the international community, the
junta held General Elections in 1990 May.

In the May 27 1990 General Elections, the NLD won with a land-slide victory,
gaining 82% of total votes. Yet, the illegitimate SLORC/SPDC Regime has not
transferred State Power to the victors and has prohibited the NLD from
holding a People's Parliament.

To maintain its iron grip on the country, the SLORC/SPDC military junta not
only arrests, imprisons, detains without charges, and tortures elected MPs,
but are also trying to destroy the opposition by forcing members to resign
from NLD.

We, Former Members' Association of Student Army (FMASA), strongly condemn
the SLORC/ SPDC regime for preventing the emergence of the civilian
government by the people and the establishment of democracy, human rights
and national solidarity in
Burma, by all means.

Therefore, FMASA hereby calls for the junta to do the following;

1. Recognize and abide by the result of 1990 May Elections
2. Recognize the Committee for Representing People's Parliament
3. Allow the holding of the People's Parliament with the elected members of
Parliament
4. Unconditionally release all political prisoners including student leader
Min Ko Naing
5. Allow the emergence of the civilian government by the people
