More than a million people have fled Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo since 1991,
putting the current two-republicYugoslavia and its former republics into
third place among countries that have produced huge numbers of refugees.*
The only larger refugee populations are Palestinians and Afghans.

* Refugees are people who are outside their home country and are unable or
unwilling to return to that country because they fear persecution or armed
conflict. Included in this table are people who have been admitted as
refugees or granted asylum during the year.
