FMASA 1/99

Statement on the formation of Former Members' Association of Student Army
Even though Burma gained her independence from the British Colonialist and
stood gracefully as an independent nation, Burma became under the arbitrary
rule of the military junta in 1962 and Democracy and human Rights had no
longer prevailed in Burma since then. Under the mismanagement of the ruling
military junta, Burma became a Least Developed Country in the world. Since
the people of Burma could no longer bear the hardships under the oppressive
military regime and poverty, the struggles against the military regime grew
more and more intensified. A series of struggles against the military junta
led into the nation-wide pro-democracy uprising in 1988 spearheaded by
students.
Although the students, monks and people demanded Democracy and human Rights
peacefully, the replies of the military regime were the bullets. In the
massacres during the 1988 uprising, tens of thousands of students, monks and
people sacrificed their lives. The military junta with the other name of
SLORC took over the state power instead. Because of that demanding
situation, the students, monks and people, aiming to continue their
struggles until the restoration of Democracy and human Rights in Burma, left
for the ethnic resistance controlled areas where a Student Army emerged.
As the Student Army represent all ethnic groups and all classes of people in
Burma, people of Burma strongly~y supported the Student Army and it also
deserves the sympathy of the international community.
Realizing the political, economic and social crises in Burma and the

historical responsibility, the former member activists of Student Army in
abroad, who abandoned their armed struggles and implementing non-violent
movements, held the conference of the former members of All Burma Students'
Democratic Front (ABSDF). During the conference--from 27-3-1999 to
13-4-1999 - at a place inside Thailand, the representatives of the former
members of Student Army unanimously decided to form an organization with the
name of 'Former Members' Association of Student Army (FMASA)" to continue
the unfinished democratic struggles by means of non-violence accordance with
the historical responsibility.
Former Members' Association of Student Army (FMASA) was formed with nineteen
central committee members and the objectives are as follows;
(1) to uproot the military dictatorship
(2) to achieve Democracy and human Rights
