UN to censure human rights violators

The United Nations human rights commission will meet in Geneva on Friday
0800 GMT to name and censure those countries deemed to be the world's worst
violators of human rights.

Among those facing criticism are Yugoslavia, China, Cuba, Burma and Iran,
with recent actions in Kosovo likely to dominate the proceedings.

The United States is sponsoring a resolution criticising repression of
pro-democracy activists in China and increased restrictions in Tibet.

The BBC Geneva correspondent says China may escape censure by drawing on the
support of anti-American allies, but she says resolutions criticising Cuba
and Iran are more likely to be passed.
