Statement from ABYMU Regarding "Day

Subject: Statement from ABYMU Regarding "Dayeah"

Statement from All Burma Young Monk Union
Regarding "Dayeah" Nine Region Monk's General Movement

1. A secret mission, operating under the name of "Dayeah" (Antelope) Nine
Region
Monk's General Movement, was successfully completed on its projected
completion
date. The mission took place from November 11th 1998 to April 11, 1999.
2. Six organizations of monks that are striving towards democracy and human
rights in Burma jointly participated in the success of the mission. Originally
the Deyeah mission was to include only nine regions but it grew to eleven
regions as the mission progressed. The mission exceeded its expectations.
3. The mission's progress was impeded towards the end due to the military
government's (SPDC) instigation of a riot between Buddhist and Muslims
factions.
4. During the mission period, general Than Shwe made a speech on March 27th,
Armed Forces Day, to destroy and crush all undesirable domestic and foreign
elements. His speech was just a fist waving in thin air; the mission was
not in
any way jeopardized.
5. The goal of the mission was to speculate on the effectiveness of the
activities by monks. This information will be very instrumental in the fight
for democracy and human rights activities in 1999. It is the hope of the young
monks that they will be able to take the lead in bringing about change.
6. Young Monks Union has designated 1999 an auspicious year for the democracy
and human rights movement.
7. Young Monks Union encourages all organizations, domestic or foreign, to
step
up their momentum in the fight for democracy and human rights in 1999.
