BURMA OUT!! (r)

According to the Washington DC Singapore Embassy, writing to the editors
of The Nation magazine, in response to an article called "Singapore's
Blood Money" (Oct. 97) by Leslie Kean and Dennis Bernstein, the Myanmar
Fund was liquidated.

One should not conclude that the Singapore ties to Burma's drug lords have
been liquidated, but the Myanmar Fund (in which Singapore's Government
Investment Corporation chaired by Lee Kwan Yew held a major stake) is no
longer the vehicle.

Recall that Singapore has become the largest investor in Burma, and that,
according to then State Dept. Counternarcotics chief Robert Gelbard (with
Madeleine Albright at his side) "over half of Singapore's investment in
Burma is tied to the family of narco-trafficker Lo Hsing Han."
