NEW DELHI, April 6 (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring
5.2 on the open-ended Richter scale shook a hilly border
area between eastern Bangladesh and northeast India early
on Tuesday, an Indian Meteorological Department official
               said.

S.N. Bhattacharya, deputy director general of seismology,
told Reuters the epicentre of the tremor, which hit at
4.03
a.m. (2233 GMT, Monday), was in the area bordered by
eastern Bangladesh and India's Assam and Tripura states.

"It was more inside Bangladesh than India," he said. "The
damage should not be that extensive."

Bangladesh's only geophysical observatory in Chittagong
in
the southeast recorded a mild tremor early on Tuesday,
               meteorologist Mohammad Mominul Islam said.

"The tremor lasted 40 seconds between 2233.16 GMT and
2233.56 GMT. The epicentre of the tremor was 380 km (236
miles) from Chittagong port but its exact direction could
not
               be ascertained," said Islam.

There were no reports of casualties so far, said an
official at
the meteorological office in Guwahati, the main city in
               Assam.

The Hong Kong Observatory earlier said a quake rated at
5.3 on the Richter scale hit along the India-Myanmar
border
               at around the same time.

But Bhattacharya said he knew of no earthquake on that
               border.
