Aung San Suu Kyi's husband dies in Oxford
LONDON, March 27 (AFP) - Michael Aris, husband of Myanmar opposition
leader
Aung San Suu Kyi, died Saturday on his 53rd birthday in an Oxford hospital.
Foreign Secretary Derek Fatchett said he was "very saddened" to hear of
the
death of Aris, who had not seen his wife since January 1996.
Aware he was dying, Aris had requested a visa to visit his wife in Myanmar
but authorities turned him down, as they did on several previous occasions.
"It is with deep regret that, despite international appeals, the Burmese
(Myanmar) regime refused to grant a visa for Dr. Aris to visit his wife
before
he died," Fatchett said.
A spokeswoman at St. Antony's College in Oxford said that Aris "passed
away
at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford at 6:45 a.m. this morning (0645 GMT) this
morning, and today was his birthday.
"The family at the moment are on their way here and there will be a family
statement issued later," the spokeswoman said.
Aris and Aung San Suu Kyi, who met at Oxford and married in 1972, had two
sons, Alexander and Kim.
Born March 27, 1946, in Havana, Cuba, Aris developed an interest in the
culture of the Himalayas.
During the first years of his marriage, he served as private tutor to the
royal family of Bhutan and as official researcher on Bhutanese history.
After taking a Ph.D. in Tibetan literature in 1978, he pursued an academic
career in Oxford. In 1990-1992, Aris was a visiting professor of Tibetan and
Himalayan studies at Harvard University in the United States.
At his death, he was senior research fellow in Tibetan and Himalayan
studies and a member of the governing Body at St. Antony's College, Oxford.
