EU calls for granting visa to Mr. A

Subject: EU calls for granting visa to Mr. Aris

(EU) EU/BURMA: EU calls for husband of Aung San Suu Kyi to be granted a
visa Brussels, 23/03/1999 (Agence Europe) - The German Presidency of the
Council has made the following declaration on behalf of the EU
(unofficial translation)
"The EU Presidency has learnt that Dr. Michael Aris, husband of the Nobel
Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, has asked the Burmese government for
an entry visa, on which a final decision has not yet been taken. Dr. Aris
is seriously ill and would like to visit his wife in Burma. The EU calls on
the Burmese Government to grant Dr. Aris a visa urgently, for humanitarian
reasons and so as to satisfy his wishes. It is up to Dr. Aris himself and
his doctors to decide when and how he could go to Burma. Any further delay
of a decision would once again throw negative light on the attitude of the
Burmese Government regarding fundamental human rights."
