Burma expells Western tourists

The Burmese government has announced the expulsion of two Westerners, a
Belgian and an American, for allegedly trying to instigate student protests
in the central city of Mandalay.

A statement said that the American was flown out of the country yesterday,
and that the Belgian would be deported today.

The pair are accused of trying to incite student strikes against teaching
faculties and the government.

Correspondents say that the allegations can't be confirmed, but that there
have been occasional visits to Burma by political activists opposed to the
military government.
