(1)		Workshop on ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Scheme (AICO)

		Workshop on ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Scheme (AICO) co-sponsored by Union
of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Singapore-based German company
Hanns Seidel Foundation was held at Hotel Equatorial on 16 March. AICO
programme is to improve industries in ASEAN region through cooperation of
companies based in member countries of ASEAN.  At the workshop, Mr. Noordin
Azhari of ASEAN Secretariat in Jakata, presented the paper on Introduction to
the AICO, Mr. Dhawatchai Tangsanga Director of Ministry   of Industry of
Thailamd on Thailand's experience in implementation of AICO Scheme and UMCCI
Vice-Chairman U Tun Aye on AICO Scheme in Myanmar.

(2)		Workshop on Woodfuel Production and Marketing Opened

		The National Training Workshop on Woodfuel Production and Marketing in
Forest Agriculture  and Tree Production Systems in Myanmar co-sponsored by
Forest Department of the Ministry of Forestry and Thailand-based Regional Wood
Energy Development Programme in Asia (RWEDP) was held at  Forest Department on
16 March. The resource persons presented their papers. Nine resource persons
will present their papers to the workshop to be held from 16 to 19 March 1999.

(3)		Data User Workshop on Cross-border Migration and Reproductive Health
Study Opened

		A ceremony to open the Data User Workshop on Cross-border Migration and
Reproductive Health Study jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Immigration and
Population and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was held at the
Population Department on 16 March.

(4)		Medicine for MMCWA

		A ceremony of Donation Medicine for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare
Association by Ranbaxy Laboratory Ltd  was held  at the multi-purpose building
of MMCWA in South Okkalapa Township on 16 March. Country Manager of Ranbaxy
Laboratory Ltd. Mr. Viren Popli presented medicine to Vice Chairperson of
MMCWA.
(5)		Gem Merchants Inspect Jade and Gems

		A total of 223 gems merchants of 121 companies from nine countries and 78
local gems merchants of 39 local private companies, totalling 301, had arrived
Yangon to attend the 36th Myanma Gems  Emporium. The gems merchants inspected
jade and gems displayed at the 36th Myanma Gems Emporium on 16 March. The

merchants will continue to inspect jade and gems on 17 March.

(6)		Official of Int'l Federation of Body-builders Arrives

		At the invitation of Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee, Vice-
President of International Federation of Body-builders and Secretary-
General/Treasurer of the Asian Body-building Federation and President of
Singapore Body-building Federation Mr. Paul Chua arrived Yangon by air on 15
March to coordinate World Body-building Championships to be held in Myanmar in
2001.

(7)		Myanmar Delegation Leaves for Bangkok

		Myanmar delegation led by Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television
left Yangon on 15 March to attend the 14th meeting of ASEAN Culture and
Information Committee on Radio, Television, Film and Video Work Group to be
held in Bangkok from 17 to 19 March.

(8)		Seven Myanmar Photographers Win Prizes in 1998 ACCU Photo Contest in Asia
and the Pacific

		Seven Myanmar photographers won prizes of 1998 ACCU Photo Contest in Asia
and the Pacific. Frankie Tun Tin won a special prize for his photograph titled
'Elephant Lovers', and prizes for excellence were won by Khin Maung Myint, Aye
Myat Moe for her photograph titled "Fishing on Inle Lake", Mya Win (Rays) for
his photograph titled "Rub'em Down", Moe Min for his photograph titled "Dawn
on the Thanlwin", Tun Aung for his photograph titled "Straw Carrier" and Ryu
Myint for his photograph titled "Every Morning."  The 1998 ACCU Photo Contest
in Asia and the Pacific was organized by the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for
UNESCO(ACCU), in cooperation with UNESCO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Japan, the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO and Nihon Keizai Shimbun
(Japan Economic Journal).

		This contest was organized under the theme" Nature and Daily Life", and it
received 8,057 entries from 23 countries in Asia and the Pacific. This contest
drew the largest number of entries since this contest started. The jury met in
Tokyo from 21 to 23 July 1998, and was composed of eight jurors from
Bangladesh, China, Japan, New Zealand and ACCU. As a result of thorough
discussion by the jury members, 110 prize-winning works, including three Grand
Prix and ten Special Prizes, were selected. Each of the prize-winners was
awarded a certificate and a prize. This year a new Prize for Excellence was
offered in the contest:  a travel set from JTB (Japan Travel Bureau).

		ACCU has been organizing the Photo Contest in Asia and the Pacific every
year since 1976. The contest aims not only at the improvement of photography
in the region, but also at the mutual understanding of culture-manners,
customs, and environment- through photographs. In order to promote such
understanding, the prize-winning photographs are mounted on panels,
constituting a travelling photo exhibition, and are sent upon request to
countries in the region, where they are exhibited for the benefit of audiences
at each venue.

(9)		47,542 Stimulant Tablets Seized

		A combined group comprising Tatmadawmen (Defence Services ) of local
battalion, members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting
on information searched Lauk Shone, 25 and Kein Shin, 27 on 4 March at the

Mongshu Township, Shan State(South). The authorities seized A/99 brand 47,542
stimulant tablets together with them. Myanmar Police Force in Loi Hsaung Htauk
is taking action against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Law.
