"Thailand, Burma join forces to crack down on Asean drug trade"

"The Asian Age" Newspaper
Date March 10, 1999.
Bangkok: Thailand and Burma on Tuesday announced a deadline-bound joint
crackdown on drugs to eliminate its trafficking and use in the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The agreement was made at meetings in northern Thailand between Thai
Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai and his Burmese counterpart senior General
Than Shwe. "They agreed to intensify the cooperation and coordination of
law enforcement efforts with the aim of achieving the total eradication
of illicit drug production, processing, trafficking and use in Asean by
the Year 2020", a joint statement issued here said. The deadline was set
at Asean leaders meeting in Manila last year. Military-run Burma jointed
the regional grouping in 1997, despite protests from many western
nations, which allege gross human rights violations and say the junta is
profiting from the drug trade. The statement issued at the end of a
two-day visit here by Than Shwe, said Bangkok and Yangon had made it a
priority in bilateral relations to crush the illicit narcotics trade.
