(1)		Bawni Dam in Daik U Township Opened to Irrigate 6000 Acres of Farmland
		Bawni Dam in Daik-U Township, Bago Division, was opened on 26 February
morning. The dam was built by Irrigation Department of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Irrigation. Bawni Dam capable of irrigating 6,000 acres will
contribute to regional development and boosting production in the agriculture
sector. From 1988 till today, 20 irrigation projects including dams, diversion
weirs and river water pumping projects have been completed in Bago Division.
The projects for maintenance of Hsedawgyi Canal in Mandalay Division, Bago-
Sittoung Canal in Bago Division and flood prevent embankments in Ayeyawady
Division in order to effectively utilize the already-existed irrigation
facilities are also underway. 94 dams including the present one have been
inaugurated during the time of the State Peace and Development Council.
Located nine miles west of Yangon-Mandalay village in DaikU Township, Bawni
Dam was built on Bawni Creek. The earth dam is 815 feet long and 85 feet high.
With a total storage capacity of 39,500 acre-feet, it can irrigate 6,000
acres. Its still water storage capacity is 2,500  acres. Its surface area is
1,400 acres. The 6-foot by 4-foot portal and spillway are reinforced concrete
structures. The main canal is 8 miles long and the distributory canal is 39
miles long.
(2)		Delegates of Fourth International Heroin Conference, Correspondents Visit
			Shan State (North)
		Assistant Director of Interpol Mr Ian Bain and officials, delegates from
member countries of Interpol --China, Brunei, Australia, Bangladesh, Ghana,
India, Japan, Mauritius, New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Saudi Arabia,
Singapore, Switzerland, Tanzania, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka who
attended the Fourth International Heroin Conference sponsored by Interpol,
correspondents of Canada, NTV, AFP, Reuters, BBC, AP, Fuji TV and TV Asahi,
accompanied by member of the CCDAC Head of Department of the Strategic of
Studies Col Kyaw Thein and officials left Yangon by Tatmadaw flight on 26
February morning for Lashio in Shan State (North). The delegates, the

correspondents and officials left Lashio Airport by helicopter and arrived at
Laukkai Township at 10 am. Member of District Organization and Administrative
Committee explained to the delegates the drugs eradication activities  in
Kokang region, cultivation of opium substitute crops and development of the
region and the ethnic leader U Phon Kya Shin explained arrangements for
cultivation of opium substitute crops in 1999- 2000 and development works of
Kokang region being under taken by the State. Then, the delegates, the
correspondents and officials left Laukkai by Helicopter for Kunlong and
inspected Lwebinye Region in Kunlong Township by helicopter. They arrived at
Mongyaw region in Lashio Township at 2.30 pm. At the Mongyaw Basic Education
Middle School, Deputy Commanding Officer of regional battalion and officials
explained to the delegates the situation of the region and previous poppy
cultivation condition and progress in cultivation of opium substitute crops in
the region. Then, Col Kyaw Thein explained the destruction of poppy fields
surrounding Mongyaw and cultivation of opium substitute crops and replied to
the queries raised by the delegates and the correspondents. They flew back
Yangon via Lashio at 7 pm.
(3)		Interpol Hosts Dinner in Honour of Officials of Respective Committees
		The Interpol hosted dinner at Yangon Royal City Hotel on 26 February evening
in honour of officials of the respective committees who assisted in holding
the Fourth International Heroin Conference.
(4)		Secretary-1 Receives members of House of Representatives of Japan
		Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received Foreign Secretary Mr K Raghunath of Ministry of External Affairs of
the Republic of India and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of
Defence at 3.30 pm on 26 February. 
		Secretary-1 also received  members of the House of Representatives Mr Koichi
Kato, Mr Yoshio Mochizuki and Mr Hiroshi Moriyama at Dagon Yeiktha of the
Ministry of Defence at 5 pm on the same day.
(5)		Secretary-2 Receives Chinese Energy Delegation
		Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo
received energy delegation led by Director of China-Myanmar Economic and Trade
Information Exchange Department Mr Lu Weizhao of the People's Rep ublic of
China at the Ministry of Commerce on 26 February. They discussed economic
development of Myanmar and PRC.
(6)		Thai Boat Team Arrives
		A total of 32 members of Thai Traditional Boat Team including 18 men and
eight women  athletes and six  members of the Board of Management led by Vice-
Admiral Smont Wam-peurch (RTN) Commander of First Naval Area Command, arrived
Yangon  on 26 February morning by air for Myanmar-Thai Friendly Boat Race,
under cultural exchange programme between the two countries. Myanmar-Thai
goodwill traditional boat race will take place on Inya Lake on 27 February.
Thai team comprises five managers, 18 men rowers and eight women rowers. The
opening ceremony of the goodwill boat race will be held at Myanmar Rowing
Federation on Inya Road at 8 am on 27 February.  Interested persons may watch
it free of charge. 	

(7)		Ministers Meet Indian Foreign Secretary
		Minister for Science and Technology  met Foreign Secretary Mr K Raghunath of
Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India and party together with
Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran who called at his office at 11 am on 26
February. They discussed remote sensing, renewable energy technology,
technology exchange with the Center for Space Science and Technology Education
in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTE-AP) of India, exchange of information on
science and technology from conducting in research between India and Myanmar
and strengthening friendly relations between the two countries.
		Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office  
Brig-Gen Abel also met Foreign Secretary of India Mr K Raghunath and party who
called at his office at 2 pm on the same day. They discussed bilateral
cooperation in Information Technology, Electronic, Commerce, Hydro Power and
Rural Communication works.	
(8)		69,120 ml Taradyl Seized
		A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar
Police Force and Ward Peace and Development Council, acting on information
given by a duty conscious person, raided a house at No 343, Mahuya Street,
Ward 6, Hpa-an Township, Kayin State, on 14 February. They seized 192 bottles
of taradyl liquid 69,120 ml kept in fresh milk tins of Nge Lay (a) Nay Lin
Aung of Mingala Taungnyunt Township, Yangon. Action is being taken against him
under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
