Surin aims to defuse row with EU
At talks next week with junta minister
Thailand will hold talks with Burma next week in a bid to defuse a row with
the
European Union over the ministerial meeting, Deputy Foreign Ministry
Sukhumbhand Paribatra said.
M.R. Sukhumbhand said after talks with German Ambassador Hermann Erath that
Thailand wanted the matter settled next week during talks between Foreign
Minister Surin Pitsuwan and his Burmese counterpart Win Aung.
U Win Aung will be in Bangkok for a two-day visit starting Friday.
Thailand and Germany want to see the meeting between foreign ministers of the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the EU go ahead as scheduled on
March 30 in Berlin, the deputy minister said.
The German ambassador would meet with Mr Surin after his meeting with the
Burmese minister and before Mr Surin's departure for Germany on February 24.
Germany, which is the EU presidency, is to seek a firm position on what its EU
members want from Burma, while Thailand will ask Burma of its willingness to
attend the meeting in Berlin, he added.
Thailand is the Asean coordinator with the EU.
