ABSDO' s Union day pledge

52nd Anniversary of Union day 12th February 1999
Democracy and human rights has been absent on this auspicious fifty second
anniversary of Union day. We members of All Burma Students Democratic
Organization renew our pledge to strike for a democratic Union, that
guarantees peace, human and democratic rights for all peoples including
indigenous nationalities residing and sharing together our motherland,
Burma.
Unfortunately, gross violation of Human rights remains. The recent arrest of
200 politically active students and their sentence to long term imprisonment
and detention of 186 MPs clearly underlines this. One student even received
54 years altogether. The 1990 election result has not been materialized as
an act of insult toward the very desire of the people of the union of Burma.
We are greatly distressed by the ruthless act of SPDC regime denying
indigenous ethnic rights, the right to self determination, which we regard
as universally essential and vital to an indivisible nation.
We all people belonging to the union of Burma should not fall prey to the
British colonialist tactics of divide and rule currently used by the SPDC
regime.
We believe that only when a democratic Government (according to 1990
election result) is established, a genuine national reconciliation could be
achieved. As long as the gun-trotting SPDC is in power, we could never
achieve a definite, peaceful and profound meaning of the Union.
Hence we strongly urge the Australian and International community to support
and recognize the CRPP (Committee Representing People's Parliament). The
CRPP is the highest authority of the people of Burma endorsed by 251 members
of parliament elected and its task is to convene the people' parliament
implementing the result of the 1990 elections. In order to achieve this, all
levels of Australian Government must impose tough measures against the
brutal SPDC regime including economic sanctions, selective purchasing
(boycotting companies investing in Burma), and non co-operation.

We demand:
? the SPDC to release all political prisoners including MPs, student
detainees, student leader Min Ko Naing and to re-open all universities and
colleges
? Recognition of CRPP as highest authority of people of Burma , right to
convene the people' parliament as per 1990 election result
? SPDC to enter peaceful dialogue with CRPP.
