(1)		Development Work Coordinated for Taninthayi Division
		The Leading Committee for Regional Development of Taninthayi Division held a
coordination meeting  in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Progress of
Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. Chairman of the
Leading Committee  for Development of Region-wise  Agriculture Sector
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen 
Tin Oo attended the meeting.  With regard to effort for regional sufficiency
in rice and development of production work of the agricultural sector,
progress has been achieved to such an extent that there has been self-
sufficiency in rice in some states and divisions.  It is also needed to
achieve self-sufficiency in rice in Taninthayi Division, and in addition, the
cultivation of rubber and oil palm which are thriving in Taninthayi Division,
will be extended. National private entrepreneurs are being engaged in paddy
cultivation in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions, and therefore, encouragement is
to be given to private entrepreneurs to carry out rubber and oil palm
cultivation. Arrangements are being made to extend cultivable lands including
50,000 acres of land for cultivation of rubber, 3,000 acres of land for oil
palm and 5,000 acres of land for other oil crops in Taninthayi Division in
1999-2000.
(2)		Secretary-2 Receives National Race Representatives of Shan State (North)
		Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo
received national race representatives U Than Htay, U Thein Htay and U Myint
Lwin of Shan State (North) who called at the office of the Ministry of
Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs at 3.30 pm
on 1 January. They discussed cultivation of crops and perennial plants to be
extended in the region and regional development matters.
(3)		Target Set to Achieve 6.2 per cent GDP Growth
		A work coordination meeting on implementation of annual plan targets of the
projects for 1998-99 and drafting of plan targets of the projects for
1999-2000 was held at the Office of the Ministers on 1 Jan. In his address,
Minister for National Planning and Economic Development spoke at length on
national economic development with crucial economic indicators compared with
those of some other countries, and noted that in endeavouring for the nation
it is necessary not to suffer economic setbacks due to economic problems

occurring in the region; target has been set to achieve 6.2 per cent GDP
growth.
(4)		Traders Hotel Donates Clothes to School for Blind
		The Traders Hotel donated clothes to the school for the blind under the
Social Welfare Department at the school on Panbingyi Street in Kyimyindine
Township on 1 January afternoon. Manager of the hotel Mr Arbind Shrestha and
Director of Staff Affairs handed over clothes to Principal of the school.
(5)		Stimulant Tablets seized in Taunggyi
		A total of 4,797 stimulant tablets were seized from the house at 11/A
Kyauktalon Street, Thittaw Ward, Taunggyi, Shan State, by a team comprising
members of the local Defence Services Intelligence unit, police and officials
of departments concerned on 24 December. Two people-- a man and a woman --
were caught red-handed by the authorities who were watching the house acting
on information when they entered  the house. The two are Ma Khin Htwe Win (a)
Ma Tu Tu Mar, and U Maung Maung.  On further investigation, the authorities
arrested two other people-- Sai Chei and Aung Moe (a) Aung Kyaw Zaw for drug
trafficking.  Action is being taken against the four under the Narcotic Drugs
and Psychotropic Substances Law.
