WHETHER U.S. SANCTIONS HAVE WORKED

Subject: WHETHER U.S. SANCTIONS HAVE WORKED FOR BURMA

30th December 1998
**************************
Have US sanctions worked to influence the Burmese situation?According to
Madeleine Albright, US Secretary of State,US policies toward  Burma and
China are experimental and US has not concluded that sanctions imposed on
Burma have worked. For the United States it is too premature to judge whether
sanctions have worked.Yet one of the leading figures from SPDC admitted that
sanctions have hurt the Burmese regime. Therefore the answer is crystal clear.

"Not only American companies. The sanctions have an effect on other countries
and make them fearful of investing here, For example, any Japanese companies
that are operation here in Myanmar cannot operate in the state of
Massachusetts. They and other multinational companies don't want to invest
here because they are afraid of retaliation from the United States."
--Brig. General David Abel, Minister, Burma's Military Dictatorship

That was what the military brasshat said  before Massachusetts Burma law was
annunciated as unconstitutional. Therefore, it is unquivocal that sanctions
have hurt the Burmese military regime.Obviously sanctions are not " A Blunt
and Ineffective Foreign Policy Weapon".
