((1)		Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Arrives Back From Dhaka
	
		Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung
Win arrived back Yangon from Dhaka via Bangkok by air, on 21 December evening
after attending the Second Ministerial Meeting of BIMST-EC (Bangladesh-India-
Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation) held on 19 December 1998 in
Dhaka, Bangladesh. At the meeting, the member countries of the BIMST-EC
cordially discussed matters relating to the BIMST-EC Cooperative Work
Programme and selected six priority sectors for cooperation which are trade
and investment, technology, transport and communications, energy, tourism and
fishery. The meeting also considered Nepal's application for observer status
and member States of BIMST-EC welcomed Nepal as an observer. A joint statement
was also issued at the conclusion of the Ministerial Meeting. The heads of the
delegation of the Member States of the BIMST-EC paid a call on the Prime
Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh HE Sheikh Hasina in the
evening on 19 December. During his stay in Dhaka, Deputy Minister also held
separate bilateral talks with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand
Mr. Sukhumbhand Paribatra on 18 December, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs
of Bangladesh Mr. Abdus Samad Azad on 19 December and with the Minister of
State of Republic of India Ms. Vasundhara Raje on 20 December.

(2)		Myanmar Paper Mill Opens  in Dagon Myothit (South)

		Myanmar Paper Mill of Asia World Industries Ltd opened at the corner of Muse
and Haka streets at Industrial Zone 1 in Dagon Myothit (South) Township on 22
December. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt unveiled the signboard. Managing Director of AWIL reported on the
construction of the mill, machines installed at the mill, the aim of the mill,
production of finished goods from used paper, manufacturing of cardboard and
plans to produce stationery and newsprint.
 
(3)		Newly-built, Renovated School Buildings Opened in Dagon Seikkan Township

		The ceremonies to open and hand over newly constructed and renovated Basic
Education Primary School buildings in Dagon Seikkan Township in Yangon
Division was held on 22 December. The new building of Primary School No 4 in
Dagon Seikkan Township was opened and handed over to the Basic Education
Department at a ceremony at the school in Ward 98 in the township. Director-
General of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development handed
over related documents of the school plot and building to Director-General of
Basic Education Department No-3. The concrete two-storey school building is
194 feet long and 30 feet wide on a plot stretching 1.515 acres built by
DHSHD. A similar ceremony took place at Primary School No.1 in Ward No.89 in
Dagon Seikkan Township. The concrete two-storey new school building is 194
feet long and 30 feet wide. It is built by DHSHD on a 2.308 acre plot. A
renovated building of Middle School No.1 in Dagon Seikkan Township was also
handed over to the Basic Education Department at a ceremony held at the school
in Ward 88 of the township. DHSHD renovated the building. DHSHD had
established new towns and industrial zones and built related religious,
social, economic, education and administrative buildings. The department had
already constructed 22 schools. Construction entrepreneurs had also
constructed 19 schools. 

(4)		National Committee for Child Rights Meets

		The National Committee for Child Rights held a meeting at the Ministry of
Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on 22 December, addressed by Chairman
of the Committee Minister for SWRR . The committee is protecting the child
rights, giving necessary guidelines for the respective departments to
effectively implement laws concerning the child rights, arranging proper
cooperation among the departments, welfare organizations and NGOs, assessing
the developments, giving directives to effectively utilize the assistance
rendered by UN agencies, international organizations, welfare organizations
and NGOs, taking preventative measures against increase of juvenile crimes and
preparing reports on accomplishments.

(5)		Minister Meets WHO Official

		Minister for Health met Adviser to the World Health Organization Dr. BB
Gaitonde, accompanied by Resident Representative of WHO Dr. Klaus Wagner, who
called at his office on 22 December.

(6)		PRC Company to Renovate Caustic Soda, Chlorine Plants

		Kunming Electrochemical Plant of the People's Republic of China agreed to
renovate the caustic soda and chlorine plants at No-1 Sittaung Paper Mill of
Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries. Managing Director of MPCI and Managing
Director of the Chinese Plant Mr. Gao Chong Kuan signed the contract at the
ministry on 22 December.
