(1)		Senior General Than Shwe Meets Heads of State/Government of ASEAN Member
Nations in Socialist Republic of Vietnam

		Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar
and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe called on Prime Minister Mr. Phan
Van Khai of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the Prime Minister's Office
at the Government House at 5 pm on 14 December. Senior General Than Shwe and
Mr. Phan Van Khai discussed reaffirmation of the basic principles of the
ASEAN, avoidance of acts that may harm the principles and further flourishing
of the principle of the non-interference. The two leaders also agreed to the
promotion of Myanmar-Vietnam cooperation in ASEAN activities.

		President Mr. J. Ejercito Estrada of the Republic of the Philippines called
on Senior General Than Shwe in Onyx Room at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi at 6
pm on 15 December. The two leaders expressed satisfaction in seeing progress
in Myanmar-Philippines relations in the recent years and dis-cussed promotion
of bilateral cooperation.

		Prime Minister Mr. Goh Chok Tong of the Republic of Singapore called on
Senior General Than Shwe at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi at 4 pm on 14
December. Prime Minister Mr. Goh Chok Tong discussed matters pertaining to the
ASEAN and promotion of relations and cooperation between South-East Asian
nations and Latin American countries. Senior General Than Shwe emphasized the
importance of further consolidation of the ASEAN. He stated though it could be
said that Myanmar was not totally free from the regional economic turmoil, the
affects of the economic turmoil that hit the nation were not as harsh as in
other countries, explaining the endeavours to maintain nation peace and
stability and to gain good economic foundations. The two leaders also agreed
to promote bilateral economic and technical cooperation.

		Prime Minister Mr. Samdech Hun Sen of the Royal Government of Cambodia
called on Senior General Than Shwe at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi at 3 pm on
14 December. Prime Minister Mr. Samdech Hun Sen explained to the Senior
General the latest developments in Cambodia and presented the matter relating
to Cambodia's entry into the ASEAN. Senior General Than Shwe expressed support
and wish for Cambodia to become an ASEAN member. They also agreed to the
appointment of resident ambassadors in capital cities of both nations to
further  enhance bilateral relations.	

(2)		First Education and Technology Exhibition 98 Opens

		The First Education and Technology Exhibition 98 sponsored by New Link Co.
Ltd of Myanmar Computer Co. Ltd (MCC) opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall
on 18 December, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee
Chairman of Myanmar Computer Technology Development Council Secretary-1 of the
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Minister for Science &
Technology and Minister for Education formally opened the First Education and
Technology Exhibition 98. Secretary-1 said encouragement is being given for
successfully applying of market-economic system, advancement of modern know-
how and expertise in trade, investment and banking and development of
Information Technology. He also spoke of arrangements for  extensive
application of computerized modern technologies in the administrative and
education sectors, teaching and studies through computers and efforts computer
networking for wide use of computers in management, the government's
encouragement for development of the private sector, establishment of services
by entrepreneurs to provide training on modern technologies and various
training services for technology transfer and development.  

		He suggested the use of Pentium computers rather than '386' and '486' to
overcome the so-called millennium bug or Y2K problem that must be faced in the
year 2000 and spoke of the advantages for not having huge sophisticated
computer network so that it might become easier to solve Y2K problem in the
near future. He urged the ministries concerned to be prepared to tackle the
Y2K problem  in Myanmar. Continuing, he spoke of wide use of Internet in the
private sector and urged Myanmar computer experts to lay down necessary plan
not to let the youth get misled by the developed countries' through Internet.
The exhibition features 126 booths of 36 local and foreign entrepreneurial
organizations which display programmes on educational and technological
advancements, and educational and technological development training
programmes through Internet. The exhibition is open to all from 9 am to 5 pm
daily up to 20 December.

(3)		Secretary-1 Receives Secretary-General of Asian Productivity Organization
(APO) and 	Member  of the House of Representatives of Japan

		Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received Secretary-General of Asian Productivity Organization (APO) Mr.
Takashi Tajima at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm on 18
December.
		He also received Member of the House of Representatives of Japan Mr. Shingo
Nishimura and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm on the
same day. 

(4)		Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Leaves for Dhaka

		At the invitation of the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's
Republic of Bangladesh Mr. Adul Hasan Chowdhury, leader of Myanmar delegation
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs left Yangon for Dhaka by air on 18
December to attend the Second Ministerial Meeting of the BIMST-EC (Bangladesh-
India-Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation) to be held in Dhaka,
Bangaladesh, on 19 December. The Myanmar senior officials delegation led by
Director General U Kyaw Tint Swe has already left for Dhaka on 16 December to
attend the BIMST-EC Senior Officials Meeting which was held on 17 and 18
December prior to the Ministerial Meeting of BIMST-EC. 

		BEMST-EC is a subregional economic cooperation grouping comprising of the
five Asian States bordering Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar,
Srilanka and Thailand. Originally, the group was established as BIST-EC
(Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation) on 6 June 1997 with
the adoption of Bangkok Declaration. The group was later joined by the Union
of Myanmar  on 25 August 1997 and renamed as BIMST-EC after Myanmar was
formally admitted as a full member to the group on 22 December 1997 during the
group's Special Ministerial Meeting held in Bangkok last year.

(5)		Kayin New Year Day Celebrated

		Kayin New Year Day for the Year 2738 was observed at Maha Saywingaba Ahlein
Ngahsint in Insein Township on 18 December. Flag-hoisting ceremony was held at
6 am and those present saluted the Union flag and the Kayin national flag.
Chairman of Central Committee (Greater Yangon) for Organizing Kayin New Year
Day Professor Saw Simon Tha presided over the ceremony and spoke. Greetings
were extended in Kayin language. Officials presented prizes to the Kayin
national students who passed  1998 Basic Education High School Examination
with flying colours. The ceremony came to a close by singing Kayin national
song.
(6)		Myanmar Teams Leading in First Round Matches of Sepak Takraw Circle Games

		Myanmar women's and men's teams took part in the first round of Sepak Takraw
Circle Game in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, on 18 December.
Thailand is leading with 1,147 points in A group of the first round of the
women's Sepak Takraw Circle Game and Myanmar also leads with 900 points in B
group. In the first round of men's Sepak Takraw Circle Game, Thailand is first
with 1,450 points in A group and Myanmar also leads with 1,550 points in B
group.
