(1)		Senior General Than Shwe and Entourage Arrive Hanoi
	At the invitation of Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr.
Phan Van Khai, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime
Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Daw
Kyaing Kyaing, Secretary-1 of State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt and members, left Yangon by special flight on 14 December to attend the
Sixth ASEAN Summit and Meetings of the ASEAN Heads of State/Government and
Heads of State/ Government of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the
Republic of Korea scheduled to be held in Hanoi beginning 15 December. They
arrived at Noibai International Airport in Hanoi at 10 am local time. Senior
General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and entourage were welcomed by
Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Mr. Chu Tuan Nha, Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Nguyen Van Nganh, Ambassador of Vietnam to
Myanmar Mr. Nguyen Dan Khoa and welcoming party, Minister at the State Peace
and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign
Affairs U Win Aung, Ambassador of Myanmar to Vietnam U Khin Soe and wife,
Military Attache Commodore Myo Tint and wife and embassy staff. Afterwards,
the Senior General and entourage proceeded to Hanoi Daewoo Hotel where they
will be staying while in Hanoi. Myanmar delegation issued a statement upon
arrival at Noibai International Airport. 
(2)		Extensive Services for Protection of Iodine Deficiency Diseases
Coordinated
		The Meeting No. 1/98 of the central organization for protection of iodine
deficiency diseases was held at the Doctors Refresher Training School in Dagon
Township on 14 December, attended by Minister for Health. Myanmar is
implementing the project for protection of iodine deficiency diseases as a
long-term plan with the guidance of the National Health Committee and in
coordination and cooperation with the related governmental departments and
social organizations as well as in cooperation with the private salt dealers.
The Ministry of Health and Myanma Salt and Marine Chemical Enterprise of the
Ministry of Mines play the important role in protection of iodine deficiency
diseases and the United Nations agencies such as WHO, UNICEF and UNDP have
recognized the accomplishments in Myanmar's national project for control of
iodine deficiency diseases. 
(3)		Prizes Handed Over to Officials for Children in Myanmar in Art
Competition
		A ceremony to hand over prizes for eleven children in Myanmar who won prizes
in the art competition under the title of "Egypt in the Eyes of Foreign
Children for the Year 1997" sponsored by Department of National Culture
Affairs for Children of Egypt in 1997 was held at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs on 14 December. Ambassador of Egypt to Myanmar  handed over the prizes
to Deputy Director General of No.3 Basic Education Department through
Director-General of Consular, International Law & Treaties & Research
Department.
(4)		Inter-country Meeting on Integrated Management of Childhood Illness
(IMCI) Held
		Inter-country Meeting on Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI)
arranged by South East Asia Region of World Health Organization was held at
Summit Parkview Hotel on 14 December. On behalf of Minister for Health ,
Deputy Minister made a speech. He spoke of implementation of tactics of
Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) of WHO and UNICEF in 1996
and maternal health care service. Next, Resident Representative of WHO read
the speech of Regional Director of South East Asia Dr. Utaung Raphe and
Resident Representative of UNICEF spoke. Dr. Sawat Ramaboot of acute
respiratory infections and diarrhoea control project of Office of Regional
Director of South East Asia reported on objectives of the meeting. Altogether
33 delegates of eight SEA nations and 11 observers were present. The meeting
continues till 17 December. 
(5)		Ground Broken to Build Paint Factory
		Stakes were driven in to build a joint-venture factory in Pyinmabin
Industrial Zone, Mingaladon Township,  to produce various kinds of paints in
Myanmar. Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited and Berger International
Co Ltd of Singapore jointly formed Berger Paints Manufacturing Ltd to set up
the factory. 
(6)		Myanmar Men's Team Beats Brunei's in Sepak Takraw
		Myanmar men's sepak takraw team beat their Brunei counterparts 2-0 in regu
event at the Asian Games in Bangkok on 13 December. On 14 December, Myanmar
men's team beat the Filipino team 2-0 in regu event. Myanmar women's team beat
their Japanese counterparts 2-0. Myanmar boys will meet their Lao counterparts
this evening for their final regu group match and Myanmar girls will meet
their Lao counterparts in their final regu group match on 15 December.
(7)		Books Presented by mv Doulos to Libraries of Information and Public
Relations Department
		Captain and director of mv Doulos presented books for libraries of
Information and Public Relations Department on board the ship on 14 December.
The crew presented a programme of songs and dances. Captain Mr. Graham Bird
extended greetings and presented gifts to the deputy minister.
(8)		CSO Official Leaves for Republic of Korea
		Director U Soung Tin of Central Statistical Organization, Ministry of
National Planning and Economic Development left Yangon by air on 14 December
to attend the Seminar on Application of Information Technology in National
Statistical Office in Taejon, Republic of Korea.
(9)		Singapore Chinese Buddhists Donate Alms Worth Over K 4m to 2,500 Members
of Sangha
		Chinese Buddhist lay disciples of Singapore headed by Sayadaw Shi Fazhao of
Golden Buddhist Temple in Singapore offered soon(food ), thabeik(bowl), robes
and alms to 2,500 members of the Sangha(Monks) of Mandalay seven townships at
Atumashi Kyaung Dawgyi (incomparable Monastery) in Mandalay,  Aung Myay Thazan
Township on 13 December.
(10)		Secretary-2 Receives CCEC Chairman
		Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo
received Chairman Prof. Mr. Luo Shu Sheng of Chengda Chemical Engineering
Corporation of Sichuan Province, the People's Republic of China, and party at
Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence on 14 December.
(11)		Chairman of UPSA Pain Institute of France Calls on Minister for Health
		Chairman Mme Dr. Nicole Bru of UPSA Pain Institute of France and party paid
a courtesy call on Minister  for Health  at his office on 14 December.
