(1)   Taunggyi Technical High School upgraded

YANGON, 29 Dec-The technical high schoo1 in Taunggyi Township was upgraded to
technical
institute at a ceremony held at the institute on 21 December morning.

    Present on the occasion were Chairman of Shan State Peace and Deve10pment
Counci1
Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo and wife, division-1evel
officials, district-level officials, guests, members of the cultural troupes
of Shan State, members of
band troops and dance troupes and Principal of the institute Daw Kye Yi and
staff.

    The commander unveiled the signboard of the institute by pressing-a
button.

    Daw Kye Yi and Principal of Ayethaya Technical Institute Daw Toe Toe Than
formally opened
the institute.

    The commander and party inspected the workshops there.

    Speaking at the ceremony, the commander said the students should not be
misled by instigation's
of destructive elements. They should strive to become technicians on whom the
nation can rely and
to become good industrial workers who are able to take part in national
development undertakings,
he stressed.

    Daw Kye Yi reported on the history of the institute, subjects taught there
and the organizational
set-up.

    She presented a commemorative pennant to the commander.

(2)   More NLD members resign

YANGON, 29 Dec-One hundred and eighty-three members resigned from the National
League
for Democracy of Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 13 December.

    One hundred and eighty-three members of Labutta Township NLD party,
Ayeyawady Division,
on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of
resignation to Labutta
Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party
concerned on
13 December as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of
NLD.

Myeik 

Nine members of Myeik Township NLD party, Taninthayi Division, on their own
volition, tendered
their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township
Multiparty Democracy
General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 23 December as
they no longer
wished to participate in political activities of NLD.-

(3)   Minister inspects Unloading of materials from mv Magway

YANGON, 29 Dec-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected
unloading of
materials imported from Singapore for general renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda
from mv Magway
at No 3 Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf this evening.
    The minister gave instructions on worksite safety and proper care to
prevent damage.

(4)    Coal to be mined at Lweje region on production-sharing basis

YANGON, 29 Dec-The No 3 Mining Enterprise of the Ministry of Mines and Bum
Burizat
Company Limited today agreed to mine coal on production-sharing basis at Lweje
Coal Mmes,
Momauk Township, Bhamo District, Kachin State.
    Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint said the
Government of the
Union of Myanmar is practising independent economic policies for national
economic all-round
progress. Due to adoption of the market-oriented economy in the nation,
opportunities to attract
foreign investments have emerged, he said, adding a law was enacted to create
investment
opportunities for Myanmar mar nationals as well. He said the ministry is
striving for development of
the nation's natural resources and the mining industries for the nation to get
abreast with other
nations. the enterprises under the ministry is forming join-ventures with
local and foreign companies
and that the present agreement is a step in launching cooperation in the
sector.

    The minister said according to the contract, coal will be mined at Lweje
region, Momauk, Kachin
State. Border trade between Myanmar and the People's Republic of China will
prosper as Lweje
was designated as a border trade town recently. Coal mined at the project will
be sold to local
industries according to the requirement. The project will enhance regional
progress and create job
opportunities.

He said systematic programmes should be laid down to meet the production
target with experience,
technology and skill provided by local and foreign technicians. The ministry
and the enterprise will
give directions and assistance as required.

    Preventive measures need to be taken against forest depletion and
environmental degradation, he
said.

    Managing Director of No 3 Mining Enterprise U Hsan Tun and Managing
Director of the
company U Zaw Moe also spoke on the occasion.
    The two officials signed the contract at the ministry.

    Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at State Peace and
Development Council
Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung presented the MIC permit to the company
and Minister
Brig-Gen Ohn Myint the work permit.

    Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein,
officials and guests.

(5)   TV  retransmissions improved

YANGON, 29 Dec- TV Retransmission Station in Monghsat, eastern Shan State,
upgraded its
transmission capacity from 10 watt to 50 watt with the fund of the Department
of Progress of
Border Areas and National Races and under supervision of Myanma Radio and
Television.

    The work for upgrading the transmission capacity was completed on 25
December.

    The TV station is retransmitting MRTV programmes with greater clarity with
the use of 50-watt
transmission capacity beginning 25 December.

Taninthayi Division

    Similarly, TV Retransmission Station in Bokepyin, Taninthayi Division,
upgraded its transmission
capacity from 10 watt to 50 watt with the fund of the Department of Progress
of Border Areas and
National Races and under the supervision of Myanma Radio and Television.

    The work for upgrading the transmission capacity was completed on 27
December.

    The TV station is retransmitting MRTV programmes with greater clarity with
the use of 50-watt
transmission capacity beginning 27 December.

(6)   Refresher Course No 3/98 for Service Personnel of Ministry of PBANRDA
concludes

YANGON, 29 Dec-The concluding ceremony of Refresher Course No 3/98 for Service
Personnel of Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and
Development Affairs
was held at the Training Hall of Tiger Parahita School of Department for
Development of Border
Areas and National Races this morning, attended by Minister for Progress of
Border Areas and
National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt.

    Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for PBANRDA U Kyaw Tin,
directors-general and officials and guests.

    Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and
National Races Col
Wunna Maung Lwin presented certificates to the trainees.
    Then, Minister for PBANRDA Col Thein Nyunt and officials inspected
construction of buildings
for upgrading Degree College of Development of National Races, greening of the
school environs
and preparations.

(7)   K lm presented for fund of Institute of Economics

YANGON, 29 Dec-Cash donation for trust fund of Yangon Institute of Economics
in
commemoration of 34th anniversary founding day of the institute was held at
the institute on 25
December.

    Present were Rector U Maw Than, Pro-rector Daw Khin Thein Yi, professors,
lecturers and
faculty members.

    In his speech, Rector U Maw Than said the ceremony to pay respects to
faculty members, the
paper reading session, dinner and the photo exhibition were successfully held
and gifts and K10,000
each were presented to retired faculty members, adding interest of the fund
will be used in academic
matters and research work of the institute.

    Daw Khin Thein Yi and Chairman of Committee for Observance of 34th
anniversary founding
day of the Institute of Economics U Kyaw Phone Myint gave speeches.

    Afterwards, U Kyaw Phone Myint presented one million kyats toward the fund
through U Maw
Than.

    Gifts were also presented to those who participated in the ceremony of the
34th anniversary
founding day of the Institute of Economics.

(8)   U Tin Latt accredited to India

YANGON, 30 Dec-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the
Union
of Myanmar has appointed- U Tin Latt, Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Union
of Myanmar to Nepal, as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the
Union of Myanmar
to the Republic of India.

(9)   Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs meets

YANGON, 29 Dec Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs held its
meeting No 5/98 at Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this
afternoon.

    Present on the occasion were Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May
May Yi,
member of MNWCWA and Head of Working Group for Protection of Women against
Violence
and Rehabilitation Dr Khin Win Shwe, Secretary of MNWCWA Director-General of
Social
Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing and committee members.

    Vice-Chairperson Daw May May Yi made a speech on the occasion.

    Secretary of MNWCWA Director-General of SWD Col Sit Myaing explained about
progress of
work.
    Heads of various working groups reported to the meeting on their
activities.

    The meeting ended in thc evening with the concluding remarks by Vice-
Chairperson Daw May
May Yi.
