Burma has agreed to help stop illegal Burmese immigrants coming to
Thailand and to work on joint tourism initiatives.
The 16th Local Thai-Burmese Border Committee meeting, held in
Mae Sot district on Friday, thrashed out the issues.
Committee chairman Col Chayutti Boonparn urged Rangoon to stop
illegal immigration saying it caused Thailand social problems.
The colonel's Burmese counterpart Maj Tin Ngwe promised to
toughen up cross-border procedures and stop people crossing at
non-authorised border points.
Both countries also agreed to co-organise Songkran and Loy
Krathong fairs, other festivities and traditional boxing contests.
Maj Tin Ngwe said he was concerned about the Karen National
Union allegedly using Thailand as a base for attacks on Burmese
troops.
Col Chayutti replied that Thai security forces had done their best to
prevent such attacks by the anti-Rangoon rebels. He said the situation
would be solved when the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
started to help monitor refugee camps in Thailand.
