BORDER
Thais, Burmese to
develop towns
Chiang Rai
Thai and Burmese authorities plan to join hands to develop border
towns as tourism spots.
The plan to promote tourism along the border was raised by Burmese
military leaders during yesterday's religious ceremony celebrating a
replica of ancient Shwe Dagon stupa in Burma's Tachilek town.
Burma wants to use the 50-metrehigh stupa as a selling point to draw
tourists to Tachilek. It also plans to turn other border towns into
tourism attractions.
Maj-Gen Suthin Chankrachang, deputy commander of the Third
Army Area and Chiang Rai Governor Wicharn Chaiyanant, who led
the Thai delegation to the ceremony, promised to cooperate with
Burma to develop the border areas and proposed Burma launch
promotional activities to draw tourists from China.
