Army to open checkpoints

BORDER
Army to open
checkpoints
To facilitate log imports from Burma
The army will open temporary border checkpoints to facilitate
delivery of logs into the country from Burma and Cambodia as
requested by the Interior Ministry and the Forestry Department, the
army chief said.
The logs belong to Thai companies with concessions for logging
operations in those countries.
Gen Surayud Chulanont said the logs would be checked carefully to
ensure they had not been cut on the Thai side and transported across
the border.
The army chief added that how many checkpoints were to be opened
would be decided after consultation with the Interior Ministry and
other agencies concerned.
He did not say when their opening would take place, but said they
would remain open until year's end.
A source said the checkpoints to be opened were likely to be at the
An Ma Pass in Ubon Ratchathani and the Chong Chom Pass in Surin
to facilitate delivery of logs from Cambodia, and at some points on the
Thai-Burmese border.
To protect forest and game reserves, especially in the Salween
National Park straddling Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces, the Third
Army has since June set up a task force to look after them and arrange
for Karen refugees fleeing fighting in Burma to be kept together at
holding centres.
