Staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) will start their job assisting Burmese refugees in Tak and
Mae Hong Son later this month, according to deputy Mae Hong Son
Governor Amornphan Nimanant.
Mr Amornphan, in his capacity as a member of the provincial
Thai-Burmese Border Command Centre, said the UNHCR will send
its representatives to border areas of Tak and Mae Hong Son late this
month to ensure safety for more than 30,000 Burmese refugees in
many shelters there and register these refugees for future repatriation.
The UNHCR staff will also help seek financial support and necessities
for concerned Thai officials working at refugee camps in the two
northern provinces, he added.
On Monday and yesterday, UNHCR representatives met with Mr
Amornphan to discuss how UNHCR staff and provincial officials
should work together to help the refugees.
The UNHCR team also paid visits to Ban Nai Soi Shelter in Muang
District and Mae Lama Luang Shelter in Sop Moi District before
heading for other refugee camps in Mae Sot district of Tak.
