Declaration on attitude of New Mon

Subject : Declaration on attitude of NMSP in connection with acts of National
League for Democracy

Date: 29 September 1998

The National League for Democracy continues its activities for convening of a
Hluttaw. In connection with these activities, the New Mon State Party declares
its attitude as follows:

1. The New Mon State Party reached the cease-fire and peace agreement with the
government on 29 June 1995, aiming at maintenance of peace and stability of
the State and regional development. It took over two years to make this
agreement, on which consensus was reached after holding coordination amidst
various difficulties.

2. As the National League for Democracy's demand to convene a Hluttaw is a
follow-up matter of the 1990 General Election, which was organized by the
government, it must be carried out in accord with the government's lawful
arrangement. NLD is not authorized to do it.

3. If any organization employs confrontation campaign or is engaged in riot,
violence and unlawful activities, it will cause loss to the nationalities as
well as to the State and people. Hence, the New Mon State Party never ever
desires or supports such activities.

4. The New Mon State Party has never made contacts or cooperated with the
National League for Democracy. The New Mon State Party hereby announces that
it will uphold the cease-fire and peace agreement made with the government,
and strive on for development of the Mon region of Mon State and maintenance
of peace and stability of the State.
