'Mass rally' condemns dissident

Thousands of people have gathered in northern Burma to stage a fourth "mass
rally" against opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her National league
for Democracy (NLD) party, state-run newspapers said yesterday.
Some 29,000 people reportedly gathered in Myinkyina twonship of Kachin
State yesterday to express their "genuine disires at a mass meeting," said
state-run New Light of Myanmar daily.
It was the fourth such "mass rally" to be staged around the country.
Speeches at the rallies have sung the praises of the military junta which
has ruled Burma since September, 1988, and called for the deportation of
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi and the disbanding of the NLD, which won
the 1990 general election by a landslide but has been blocked form power
since.
Meanwhile, another member of Mrs Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy
has resigned as a member of parliament, Burma's state-run media reported
late on Thursday.
U Mya Aye, who won a seat under the NLD banner in 1990, resigned since he
no longer wished "to be in politics".

* Airline industry officials said yesterday the Singaporean partner in
Burma's flag carrier, Myanmar Airways International, has withdrawn its
investment in the joint venture. Highsonic Enterprise Pte Ltd began
joint-venture operations with Myanmar Airways in August 1993. The pullout
became effective Monday. Local staff were informed last week that the
Singapore partner was pulling out due to economic difficulties.
