Burma tells UN to stay out of domestic affairs

The foreign minister of Burma, U Ohn Gyaw, has told the United Nations not
to interfere with its domestic affairs by pressing for democratic reforms
in the country.

Mr Ohn Gyaw said political pressure had been put on his government to adopt
democracy, but it was committed to following a path it considered to be
more suitable to the country's traditions.

For the past seven years, the U.N. General Assembly has passed a resolution
condemning Burma's military regime for human rights abuses.

The Burmese opposition called on the General Assembly to pass a tougher
resolution this year, allowing for international sanctions.
