Burmese junta steps up pressure on NLD

The military government in Burma has been stepping up pressure on the
National League for Democracy, or NLD, which is celebrating its tenth
anniversary.

Yesterday Saturday the government organised a rally of twenty-thousand
people in Mandalay to protest against the NLD and its leader, Aung San Suu
Kyi.

Reports say the rally was followed by a spate of press articles attacking
the NLD as an illegal organisation, intent on fomenting unrest.

The NLD says more than a-thousand of its members have been detained since it
called on the government to convene parliament last May. The government's
latest attacks on the NLD began last week, when it organised a similar rally
in the capital, Rangoon.
