KNLA General Headquarters 8-Month Summary Report
September 25, 1998

As the SPDC army is continuing its massive military operations in the base
areas of the KNU, clashes are a daily occurrence. The clashes that took
place during the period from January 1 to August 31, 1998 are as follows.

1. In the KNLA Brigade 1 area, Tha-ton District, 47 small and large-scale
clashes took place, in which 20 SPDC troops were killed and 28 wounded.

2. In the KNLA Brigade 2 area, Toung-oo District, 103 small and large-scale
clashes took place, in which 33 SPDC troops were killed and 111 wounded.

3. In KNLA Brigade 3 area, Nyaung-le-bin District, 51 small and large-scale
clashes took place, in which 33 SPDC troops were killed and 26 wounded.

4. In KNLA Brigade 4, Tavoy-Mergui District, 277 clashes took place, in
which 315 SPDC troops were killed and 306 wounded.

5. In KNLA Brigade, Pa-pun area, 398 small and large-scale clashes took
place, in which 89 SPDC troops were killed and 351 wounded.

6. In KNLA Brigade 6 area, Kaw-ka-reik District, 101 small and large-scale
clashes took place, in which 191 SPDC troops were killed and 122 wounded.

7. In KNLA Brigade 7 area, Pa-pun District, 367 small and large-scale
clashes took place, in which 146 SPDC troops were killed, 503 wounded.

8. The KNLA General Headquarters Battalion, in Kaw-ka-reik District,
clashed with the SPDC troops for 186 times. In these engagements, 186 SPDC
troops were killed and 108 were wounded.

9. In brief, in the period of 8 months the KNLA troops had:

Ø Engaged the SPDC troops in 1430 small and large-scale clashes;
Ø Killed 896 SPDC troops ;
Ø Wounded 1655;
Ø Captured 120 pieces of assorted weapon.

In the ruthless operations against the KNLA, the SPDC, in accordance with
its scorched-earth policy, has destroyed and continue to destroy countless
villages and killed thousands of innocent Karen villagers. It has and is
still destroying the villagers' orchards, farms, harvests, livestock, food
supplies and other belongings, whenever found. From these, we can only
conclude that the SPDC is destroying the Union for the sake of clinging to
power.
