Burmese opposition leader appeals for help

The Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has appealed for
international recognition and support for a committee set up to represent
members of parliament who were elected in 1990 but never allowed to take
their seats.

Many members of the parliament have been arrested in recent days along with
other opposition supporters.

In a tape smuggled out of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi said the ten member
committee had been given a mandate by the two-hundred-and-fifty-four
members of parliament to act on their behalf.

She said all laws passed by the current military government were inavlid
until approved by the parliament. The opposition National League for
Democracy says eight-hundred of its activisits have been arrested since
May.
