NCUB CALLS ON PEOPLE OF BURMA AND I

Media Statement
September 18, 1998

NCUB CALLS ON PEOPLE OF BURMA AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO
                       SUPPORT 10 MEMBER COMMITTEE

The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) calls on the
people of Burma and the international community to fully support
the 10-member Committee representing Members of Parliament
elected in the 1990 election.

The NCUB fully backs the appointment of the Committee and
whatever actions the Committee deems necessary.

The NCUB also welcomes and supports the appointment of U Saw Mra
Aung as Speaker.

The Burmese military regime, the State Peace and Development
Council (SPDC), has failed to fulfill its responsibility to
convene parliament as required by Clause 3 of the 1989
Parliamentary Election Law.

The decision to form the Committee is in line with the duty of
Members of Parliament mandated through their election in 1990 by
the people of Burma. The formation of the Committee is also in
line with the convening of a People's Parliament and efforts to
solve the political impasse plaguing the country.
