Myanmar authorities claim surrender of "insurgents"

BANGKOK, Sept 17 (AFP) - Twenty anti-government "insurgents" have =
surrendered to the Myanmar military authorities, state-run television in =
Yangon said Thursday.=20
The "insurgents" included pro-democracy students from the All Burma =
Students=92 Democratic Front (ABSDF) and former members of the Communist =
Party of Burma as well as of the ethnic Karen, Shan and Rakhine =
minorities, TV Myanmar said in a dispatch monitored here.=20
The surrenders of the activists along with their weapons took place =
between August 1 and 31 at three army regional commands, the report =
added.=20
The ABSDF was set up in the jungles along the Thai-Myanmar border by =
pro-democracy students who fled Yangon and other cities after the =
military took power in a bloody coup in 1988.=20
