The announcement

During the recent student movements, some leaders of the All Burma
Federation of Student Unions have been arrested. Many have been harassed
and forced to sign papers saying they would not participate again in the
students activities. Also their family's members were intimidated.

Some received bail and were later able to escape.

But Bakatha believes that to call for a people's parliament is not only the
responsibility of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD Party, but also for the
students, youths, monks, worker, farmer and all patriotic people. We will
continue our struggle to support the NLD party, national politics movements
and for the educational system in accordance with five policies of Bakatha
- Safeguarding of students' rights Democratic Education, Democratic cause,
Internal Peace and National cause.

Presently, the following two members of Bakatha arrived to the Thai- Burma
border area on 9th September 1998 in evading harassment and intimidation by
the military regime. 

Ko Aung Kyaw Myint
- During the 1988 democracy struggle, he was a second year student majoring
in Geology of Rangoon Arts and Science University. Then, he also
participated throughout the democracy movements. 
- In 30th June 1990, he was elected to take a charge of Central
Organization Committee of ABFSU (Lower Burma) at the student conference of
All Burma Federation of Student Unions in Mandalay. He led the student
movements and activities of ABFSU (Bakatha) with other student leaders in
1990.
- For those activities he was arrested in Jan 1991 and sentenced to 7 years
imprisonment. He was then transferred to Taungoo prison from Insein prison.
He was released in August 1996. He was expelled from his university and so
he had joined with the University of Distance Education. Currently, he is
studying 3rd year, History. 
- After he was released from prison, he continued the duty of Bakatha. He
also led the recent student movements and as the Military Intelligent tried
to arrest him, he left for the Thai Burma border.

 
Saw Sanda Nwe
- During the 1988 democracy movements, she was a second year student
majoring in Physics at the Rangoon Arts and Science University. She was
also a core member of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions and was
actively involved in the student movements.
- She was arrested on Jan 1991 and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.
- After she was released from Insein prison, she was allowed to join
university and she graduated from RASU. 
- During the recent student movements, she supported the student movements
as a member of ABFSU (Bakatha). She was under surveillance from Military
Intelligent and was also harassed and intimidated by MIs. Some of her
friends and members of ABFSU were arrested and fearing persecution she left
for the safety of the Thai-Burma border with Ko Aung Kyaw Myint.
