Embassy of the Union of Myanmar
                                           Tokyo

                                     PRESS RELEASE
                                        No. 2/1998
                               Date 10 September 1998

The Myanmar Government strongly believes that national unity, peace
and stability are the most essential elements required for the
economic and political developments of the nation. In September 1988
when the government assumes the state responsibility, the country was
on the verge of total shambles but after establishing the national
unity, peace and stability in the nation the government managed to put
the country back on its feet and paved the way to establish
multi-party democracy system practicing a Market-Oriented Economy.

On the other hand the government has managed to successfully bring in
98% of all the armed insurgent groups to give up their over (40) years
of armed struggle and to work hand in hand with the government in
rebuilding the nation.

Unfortunately, while the country is going through her priorities the
National League for Democracy's (NLD) declaration to hold a People's
Parliament on their own come up as threat to Myanmar's NATIONAL
SECURITY. Moreover the NLD held several executive committee meetings
and sought the support of the youth.

It also secretly negotiated with other organizations and has been
encouraging the masses to go out on the streets and to perform
anti-government demonstrations.

The Government of Myanmar gravely concerned that the NLD's move to
convene the parliament in the absence of a constitution could lead to
confusion and adversely effect the NATIONAL SECURITY, has taken
appropriate measures.

Starting on the 6th of September the government invited a number of
NLD members to the government guesthouses and presented the views and
discussed matters regarding the NLD's decision to convene the
parliament. The authorities in order to implement measures in
maintaining and protecting its NATIONAL SECURITY also requested the
NLD members to cooperate with the government in working together in
the maintenance of the prevailing peace, stability and
national unity of the nation. Because of the positive responses and
understanding of these NLD members, the government is very much
encouraged and hope that an understanding can be realized to work
together towards, building a stable and functioning multi-party
democracy.

On the previous occasions the NLD members who were invited to the
guests houses were allowed to return home after a limited time of
discussions were completed. It is understood that these members who
are being invited to the government guest houses will also be treated
likewise.

At the moment the NLD members in the guest houses are having their own
free time relaxing and enjoying the comforts of the government's
hospitality.

Please see the relevant photographs concerning with the NLD members.
