(5) US Globe-girdling Pilot Impressed by Myanmar's Development, Ancient
Heritage and Forest Conservation

Mr. Thomas Claytor, an American, trying to circle the world in his single-
seater aircraft, lauded Myanmar's developments and conservation of ancient
heritage and forests which he had witnessed during his two-week stay.
Arriving Yangon onboard a Cessana-180 on 27 August, he met local and foreign
journalists at the special lounge at Yangon International Airport at 10.30 am
on 9 September before leaving for Chiangmai, Thailand, in the afternoon to
continue his round-the world trip. Smiling faces and hospitality which he had
experienced during the stay was a pride for Myanmars, Mr. Claytor extolled,
saying Bagan, where conservation and restoration of ancient edifices was
excellent and systematic, had attracted him most. Separation of public
dwellings from ancient cultural edifices had enabled the nation to show its
heritage more proudly to the world in the long-term, he noted appreciating the
government for the arrangement. During the 30-minute meeting, the adventurer
said, he had to praise in wonder in seeing the palace of ancient Myanmar kings
in Mandalay, which was rebuilt to its original splendour, ancient objects at
National Museum and rare old war planes at Defences Services Museum in Yangon.
The ancient palace was destroyed during World War II. What he had noted
during visit to various regions in Myanmar was that every corner of the nation
was enjoying excellent peace, stability and security, said the pilot. There
were trees along the roads and properly conserved woods could be seen in
various places, he said, extolling the people and the government for their
forest conservation efforts. Friends tried to prevent him from visiting
Myanmar as they thought there was no security, he said. He came to the
country as he wanted to believe only what he had seen, he added. The
situation in Myanmar was totally different from what he had heard and that he
would tell his countrymen that in reality it is a secure and peaceful place
without any dangers, he said.
