Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD supporting 'terrorism': state-run press
Wed 09 Sep 98 - 08:25 GMT
BANGKOK, Sept 9 (AFP) - Myanmar's state-run media on Wednesday accused the
pro-democracy opposition led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi of
supporting
"terrorists" and hiding weapons and ammunition.
A commentary in the official New Light of Myanmar said such activities called
into question
whether the National League for Democracy (NLD) was a legitimate political
party.
"Why is it receiving, feeding and assisting the terrorists?" the newspaper
commentary, believed
to be officially inspired, said.
"Why were arms, ammunition and explosives found in the hands of its party
members?
"In fact the National league for Democracy and the lady (Aung San Suu Kyi), so
called
secretary general, are engaged in organisational activities in their attempt
to foolishly follow the
path of confrontation."
Myanmar's opposition said Tuesday the military had arrested 110 more of its
members while a
commentary in the state media called for Aung San Suu Kyi to be deported.
The deportation call, attributed to an unnamed supreme court lawyer, was
repeated in the
English-language edition of the New Light of Myanmar on Wednesday.
Opposition officials Tuesday said the junta had arrested a further 110 members
of the NLD
party, bringing the total detained in the past three days to 220.
Observers in Yangon said the arrests appeared to be a pre-emptive strike
following the NLD's
announcement that it intends unilaterally to convene the parliament elected in
1990 by the end of
September.
The NLD said in a statement that 73 of those arrested since Sunday were
members of
parliament elected in the 1990 polls which the opposition won by a landslide.
The military refused to hand over power after the election and has rejected
repeated demands
that the 1990 parliament be convened.
