Media Release

TWO STUDENTS ARRESTED IN MON STATE FOR DISTRIBUTING
                         PRO-DEMOCRACY LEAFLETS

Burmese military authorities have arrested two sixteen year-old
students in Mon State, southeast of the capital Rangoon, for
distributing pro-democracy literature.

Officers from Military Intelligence Unit 5 arrested the two
students, Maung Kan Myint and Maung Htay Aung, at midnight on 22
August.

Sources say the two young students distributed leaflets
supporting the National League for Democracy (NLD) while riding a
motorbike along the main street of Ye Township in Mon State.
Military Intelligence and Special Branch officers followed the
two and subsequently arrested them.

The ABSDF understands that students have been distributing
similar pro-democracy leaflets in many towns and cities across
the country. Students have been quickly handing out the leaflets
to people on the street and shouting pro-democracy slogans, and
then dispersing before security police arrive.

During the past week, a large number of pro-democracy leaflets
have been distributed in Ye Township. According to sources in Ye,
the authorities have accused the two students of distributing all
the leaflets in the area.

It is not yet known whether the students have been charged.
Sources in Ye say that the students will probably be charged and
sent to prison because the authorities have failed to catch
anyone else distributing the leaflets.
