missing chances

The end of the protest by Aung San Suu
Kyi is a sad news for the pro-democracy
movement. However, it is still a success
for the democracy movement because the
military stopped its use of strongarmed
tactics of the last standoff. What is so
sad however with the end of this
standoff is that the people of Burma
failed to support their leader. Even if
their life may be in danger it will be
necessary to lodge similar protest by
the people to make the military abandon
its position.

Burmese history taught us that power
holders in Burma never gave up their
power until they are forced to do so.
World politics and opinion have no value
for the power holders under Burmese
kings and today. Sleepy political
movement by the expatriates and
civilized pressure from industrial
nations will not dislodge the military
from its position. They would
annihilate Burma's population before
they give up their power.

Convening of parliament is a good way of
protest but it is a little late. It
should have been done at Bo Aung Gyaw
Road in 1990 and a government formed at
that time. If the Burmese want to have
a change mass uprising by the whole
population against the regime is the
only alternative. Unless and until the
mass respond to the call for protest by
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi there is little
chance the military will come to its
senses.
