Dissidents face eviction by force
Hat Yai, Songkhla
Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan yesterday called on Burmese
dissidents protesting in front of the Burmese embassy to move away
from the gate following warnings from Thai authorities that they may be
forcibly removed.
Mr Surin confirmed that top officials of the Foreign and Interior
ministries will meet today to decide what steps should be taken against
the protesting dissidents.
According to the minister, Thailand was obligated under the 1961
Vienna Convention to prevent any damage, intrusion or disruption of
peace and dignity at embassies.
He maintained that Thai authorities would not resort to violence to deal
with the protesting group, but would seek their cooperation to move
across the street or stage a peaceful demonstration.
"If the protesters want to continue their rally, we will not prevent them
from doing so. But, they must move away from the gate area. Under
the Vienna Convention, Thailand, as a host country, is duty-bound to
protect embassy premises and prevent disturbance of the peace of the
missions. The protesting group should understand our duty," said the
minister.
About 100 protesters, mostly student exiles from Burma, have been
camped outside the walls of the Burmese embassy for more than a
week in a show of support for opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
They are demanding the military government convene the parliament
elected in 1990.
About 30 of the protesters began a hunger strike on Saturday, saying
they will fast until parliament is convened, which the military has
repeatedly refused to do.
