Reply of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and of Foreign Affairs to
the Parliament

Answers to questions of MP Mr. Rabbae (Green Party) about investment of
Dutch company (IHC Caland) in Burma.

"The government strongly condems the human rights policy of the authorities
in Burma. They therefore do not encourage Dutch investments in Burma, and
would rather see that in general foreign investments in the country remain
absent. The desired effect of boycotts and other economic sanctions will
only be achieved when these are supported broadly by the international
community. When international sanctions are lacking, which preferably
should be in the form of a resolution of the UN Security Council, or when
it concerns economic en trade measures in a regulation of the EU, the
government does not have a any judicial means to take steps against private
companies."
