Karens Support Unified Campaign in Burma

The Australia Karen Organisation (AKO) joins with all overseas groups in
demanding that the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) in Burma,
initiate immeddiate with political groups including the National League for
Democracy (NLD)led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Ethnic groups who have
resisted the strong arm tactics and bullying by the SPDC and their
precursors, SLORC.

The AKO fully supports this Tri-partite approach in bringing about a just
and lasting peace in Burma.

It calls upon the SPDC to allow the NLD to peacefully convene parliament on
the Twenty first of August 1998.

It also demands that the SPDC recognise the people' wishes regarding the
1990 elections and release all political prisoners.

The AKO reiterates it's support for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her valiant
attempts to visit her supporters.

It calls upon the SPDC to remove all illegal laws and regulations which
restrict the free movement of elected parliamentarians.

The Australia Karen Organisation thanks the Australia Government and Mr
Alexander Downer for the strong statements of support for democracy during
the recent arrest and trial of activist Alison Vicary in Rangoon.
