YANGON, 18 Aug - A Committee for carrying out the activities of Myanma
Railways and
In1and Water Transport Services at full capacity held its work coordination
excepting No 2/98 with
an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council LtGen
Tin Oo.

YANGON, 18 Aug- Deputy Prime Minister Chairman of Myanmar Investment
Commission
Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director Mr Anont
Ruangpatananont and
party of Anont Patana Farm Co Ltd of Thailand at his office at 10.30 am today.

    Also present were Minister at the Office of the State Peace and
Development Council Chairman
Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and
officials of the
Government Office.

    They discussed Investment in agriculture, hydel power production and
road construction.

              WCAlA and SOMI concludes at Hotel Equatorial

YANGON, 18 Aug --- The Seventh Meeting of the Working Committee on Drafting
the
Framework Agreement of Asean Investment Area (WCAIA) and Fifth Meeting of
Senior Officials
on Investment (SOMI) continued for the second day in the respective rooms
at Hotel Fquatorial this
morning.

    Representatives and senior officials of Brunei, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines. Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Director-General U Maung
Maung Yi of Investment
and Company Administration Department of the Ministry of National Planning
and Economic
Development, heads of department and officials were present.

    WCAIA was held in Ball Room 1. Representatives of Asean nations
approved the final draft to
be signed at the Meeting of Asean Economic Ministers which will be held 1n
October 1998.

    At SOMI, Asean delegates sought means for investment, economic and
financial development in 
the area. It was held in Meeting Room 3.

The meetings ended in the evening .

   French reporter deported tor illegally gathering news




YANGON, 18 Aug - A French correspondent holding tourist visa was deported
from Yangon
International Airport on 1, August. evening by TG-306 for entering the
nation with false document
and illegally gathering news

    The correspondent, Mr  Phinippe Grangereau of Liberation daily of
France, was sent back home
after authorities found that with an ulterior motive he lied himself as a
company representative in his
passport contacted National League for Democracy and gathered news
illegally here.

  Holding the  Passport No 98 DF 03079, he arrived here by TG-303 on 8 July.

    When security personnel searched hlm at the airport, they found and
seized papers relating to
Myanmar's international affairs and a cassette tape from him and another
cassette tape hidden
under, his under-wear.

        Minister inspects auto-exchange, Directorate of
                           Communications

YANGON, 18 Aug- Minister for Communications. Posts and Telegraphs BngGen
Win Tin
inspected the Auto-Exchange in the eastern sector of Yangon and its
functions this morning.

    The chief engineer of Yangon auto telephone system briefed the minister
on organizational setup
of the auto-exchange and strength of personnel for operating phone lines in
the city, strength of
auto-exchanges and the number of the installed phones in the city and
breakdowns of the phone
lines and repair work..

    The minister then inspected installed and extended equipment including
PCM machine at the
exchange and gave instructions.

    He also chose a site for construction of a tower for CDMA station in
the compound of the
auto-exchange.

    The minister then proceeded to the, Directorate of Communications on
Pansodan Street.

    The Director- General of DCP and officials briefed him, on
organizational setup an functions of
the department.
    The minister gave instructions and then went round the department.

    He also inspected the office for trunk-calls under Myanma Posts and
Telecommunications,
oversaw repair work of cellular- and auto radio phones there and gave
instructions.

               $ 1,000 donated for PRC flood relief

YANGON, 18 Aug-Myanmar Red Cross Society donated $ 1,000 for flood victims
of the
People's Republic of China in 1998 at the PRC Embassy at 2 pm today.

    Present were President of MRCS Dr Hla Bu, Secretary Dr Ko Ko Gyi,
Treasurer U Tun Myint,
executive U Tun Sein and Deputy Executive Director U Hla Myint, Charge
d'Affaires ai of PRC
Embassy Mr Yu Tiegen and embassy staff.

    Mr Yu Tiegen explained flood disaster situation in PRC in 1998 and Dr
Hla Bu the purpose of
donation.

    U Tun Myint presented $ 1,000 for use in relief work for flood victims.

    Mr Yu Tiegen accepted the donation and presented a certificate of
honour to Dr Hla Bu.

      Deputy Minister for Forestry receives Governor of
                           Kochi Prefecture

YANGON, 18 Aug-Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint received
Governor of
Kochi Prefecture Mr Dakjiro Hashimoto and Chairman of Kanmatsu Group Mr
Kiyoshi Mazaki
and party of Japan at his office at 9 am today.

    Present were Managing Director U Shwe Baw of Myanma Timber Enterprise
and officials.
    They discussed plywoods and teak sawn timbers purchasing of Kanmatsu
Group from MTE and
investment opportunities in forestry sector.

                   Teleplay hailing USDA AGM

YANGON, 18 Aug -Some episodes of a teleplay hailing the Annual General
Meeting of Union
Solidarity and Development Association is being shot in Mandalay and
Myitkyina townships.

    The play "Moe-yan-thoh Lwint-pyant-zaymyi Kethayaza-toh-ei-ahman" is
being directed by
Zinyaw Maung Maung.
    The director, cast including Khin Than Nu and Soe Myat Thuza and the
crew left here by air for
the two towns at 7 am today.

               Training Course No 1/98 for factory
                         managers concludes

YANGON, 18 Aug -Training Course No 1/98 for factory managers concluded in
the training
hall of the Ministry of Industry this morning with an address by Minister
for In dustry-1 U Aung
Thaung.

    Countries of South-East Asian region are encountering financial
difficulties as a result of monetary
crisis, he said and added systematic arrangements are being made for
agricultural work based on
natural resources of the  country by making an assessment of the changing
situation of other nations.

    In order to ensure the security and stability of the nation, efforts
are being made to double
productivity in agricultural sector with a view to ensuring sufficient food
for the public.

    He spoke of the need for factory managers to carry out agricultural
work without leaving any
patch of land uncultivated, strive for boosting productivity, to cut
unnecessary expenditure, to take
innovative measures with the use of import-substitute spare parts and to
pay first priority to staff
welfare.

    He urged them to make the best use of human resources for the
development of the nation.
    Then,the minister presented certificates.

    Altogether 30 factory managers from states and divisions attended the
six-week course.
