ILO COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

The ILO Commission of Inquiry into Forced Labour in Myanmar is due to issue
its report on 20 August. This will appear as a 350-page document (including
annexes) and in electronic form on the ILO website, http://www.ilo.org.
The ILO website will also carry a press release, as will the website of the
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, http://www.icftu.org
I will also put it on Burmanet-l, and ask the BurmanetNews editor to issue
it as a number of Special Postings.

This Inquiry, which has been in preparation and action for more than two
years, has amassed more than 10.000 pages of evidence from

1) governments, inter-governmental, non-governmental organisations and
individuals,

2) hearings held in Geneva, at which direct victims and experts testified

3) the results of hundreds of interviews carried out in the field by the
prestigious Commission appointed by the ILO.

This is, without question, the most thorough, best documented and
authoritative report on a specific human rights abuse in Burma ever issued.
Its conclusions and recommendations will be particularly interesting.
